Board orders slaughterhouse closed

The Kaufman Board of Adjustments on Thursday ordered Dallas Crown
horse slaughter plant to close by Sept. 30.

"We have a mandate and an obligation to protect the public especially
in cases where something being done on one property could be damaging
the value of other properties," said Terry Capehart, Kaufman director
of development services. "In this case, Dallas Crown was determined
to be a nusiance, and the board did what it felt was in the best
interest of the Kaufman residents."

According to Capehart, plant owners have 10 days to file an appeal.
Capehart does expect Dallas Crown to challenge the order in court,
but is confident the city board members made the right decision.
