Dear Friends,
A little over a week ago we started a petition to
oppose any legislation that would take away the private property
rights of horse owners. The system we used allowed responders to send
a personalized message to their Congressional representatives and the
Obama Administration. Already thousands of
emails and letters have been sent, and the comments have been very
enlightening! People are extremely concerned about the federal
legislation that has been introduced--H.R. 503 and S. 727--and are
very vocal in their opposition. We will make sure that every
Representative and Senator in Congress sees the petition, and the
comments that many of you made to your personal representatives.
The response
so far has been tremendous, but we still need MORE!
Remember that the proponents of animal rights and a
total ban on horse slaughter are very
well organized, well financed, and have been working for years. We
are coordinating our opposition on a shoe string, but if there was
ever a grass roots effort to support, this is it!
Everyone in animal agriculture realizes that if
radical animal rights organizations can
successfully limit the rights of horse owners...then there really is
no difference between that and limiting the rights of agriculturists
and consumers in the use of any food animal. If you haven't already
done so, PLEASE sign the
petition and send a personal message to your representatives in
Washington, DC.

This week we've decided to take a proactive approach
to one of the main arguments of those who are proposing making it a
felony crime to consume horse meat in the
United States, or to transport a horse to another country where they
would be used as food animals. They claim that Americans never have,
and never will view horse meat with anything except absolute
abhorrence.
History, common sense, and the fact that almost the
entire civilized world including our closest neighbors in Canada and
Mexico, view horse meat as an ordinary food animal--an animal of
many purposes, which if it cannot be used for something else, is a
high quality and very nutrient
dense food animal, that is generally affordable, and an integral part
of their culinary tradition.
We know that only 1% to 2% of horses in the United
States have ever wound up in the food chain, but now
the entire Nation is starting to realize the horrific unintended
consequences of the closure of US processing facilities.
As more of a true measure of the cultural attitude
toward the human consumption of horse meat, and a counterpoint to the
argument that no Americans would ever consider eating horse meat, we
invite you to take our short survey.
