Calls Needed Today as Congress Acts
to Protect America's Wild Horses

May 16, 2005

Dear Humanitarian:

As we feared from the very beginning, wild horses-America's beloved national treasures-are being slaughtered as a result of a devastating rider slipped into a massive Appropriations bill during the final hours of the last Congress.  Since the riders enactment, the Cavel International horse slaughter facility in DeKalb, Ill. has killed 41 wild horses.

Responding to the growing crisis, Congressman Nick Rahall (D-WV), ranking member of the House Resources Committee, and Congressman Ed Whitfield (R-KY) have introduced an amendment to the House Interior Appropriations bill prohibiting the use of any federal taxpayer dollars to fund the slaughter of wild horses.

What you can do:

Please take a moment TODAY to contact your Member of Congress urging their immediate support of the Rahall/Whitfield Interior Appropriations Amendment.  Congress will be considering the amendment this week so your assistance is critical.   If you would like additional facts or need to find the name of your legislator, visit us at: www.saplonline.org/horses.htm or call (703) 836-4300.

Ask your Representative to support the Rahall/Whitfield Interior Appropriations Amendment (prohibiting your tax dollars from being spent on allowing wild horses to be slaughtered). And ask to know the position taken by your elected representative on this issue.

Please call, fax or e-mail your message to Congress (given the urgent timeframe, calls are the best option):

The Honorable (name)
House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
E-mail:  http://www.house.gov/writerep

Find your legislator:  http://www.saplonline.org/congress.htm

Your immediate assistance is essential to ensure Congress hears from an outpouring of concerned constituents.  Please share our "Dear Humanitarian" eAlert with family, friends and coworkers and encourage them to write letters also.  As always, please share any responses you receive from Congress with us.

Thank you so much for your help.

Chris Heyde
