Dear members:
The House version of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (HR
503), is federal legislation that will end the slaughter of horses
and the exportation of live horses for the purpose of slaughter.
This legislation, introduced by Representative Sweeney (R-NY) and
Representative Spratt (D-SC), has been referred to the House
Committee on Energy and Commerce, where it is still awaiting action
by the Committee.
It is vital to gain support for HR 503 in the House Committee on
Energy and Commerce to get it out of the Committee and ready for a
vote on the House floor.
In order to achieve this goal we are going to start a special calling
and faxing campaign focused on Committee members. Many of them
currently support the AHSPA, but more are needed.
This will be an ongoing effort to increase cosponsorship and ensure
support for the AHSPA within the Committee and Congress. The pro-
slaughter folks are working hard to misinform members, please help
ensure this doesn't happen. So far Congress is listening to the
people. Now we need them to take the final step and swiftly pass the
AHSPA.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Taking part on the campaign is very easy. Starting Monday morning
until Wednesday night everybody should do two things:
1. Call and fax ALL the members of the Committee who are NOT
cosponsoring HR 503 and request them to do so.
2. Call and fax ALL the members of the Committee who are already
cosponsoring HR 503 thanking them for listening to the public and for
standing against horse slaughter. Their continued support is vital.
We will repeat this plan every three weeks.
At the end of this alert you will find a contact info list with the
phone and fax numbers of the members of the Committee who have not
cosponsored HR 503 yet and another one with the contact info of those
who are already cosponsoring the bill.
When contacting Congressmen please be sure you mention that you call
on behalf of SAPL (Society of Animal Protective Legislation,
www.saplonline.org) and DDAL (Doris Day Animal League, www.ddal.org),
saying that these organizations support HR 503 and that you back
their position.
Also please, forward this alert to all your contacts (friends,
relatives, neighbors, work or class partners) and ask them to take
part on this campaign.
