Texas slaughterhouse ordered to close

Dallas Crown, one of the three remaining horse slaughterhouses in the United States, was ordered to close its plant in Kaufman, Texas, by September 30 by the City of Kaufman Board of Adjustments at a special meeting on Thursday.

Attorneys from Dallas Crown, which had been cited by the city for a slew of violations in the past year, twice sought temporary restraining orders to prevent the meeting but were unsuccessful.

"I know the battle isn't over, but I'm very happy with this," Kaufman Mayor Paula Bacon said on Friday. "I can't tell you how good it feels that very soon the people in Kaufman won't have to deal with the likes of them. That stigma will be gone."

The Board of Adjustments had declared Dallas Crown a nuisance on November 29 for repeatedly clogging the city's local sewer system and failing to pay nearly 30 fines levied against them.
